WHAT TO EXPECT
Each Saturday session (10AM - noon Pacific Time) will include perspectives from both Michele and Kat including examples from their own facilitation experiences, practical tips, ideas to consider, recommended resources, a small group activity, and an open discussion. Sessions are recorded and available to you.
BONUS! About 10 days after the final session, we’ll hold an optional Office Hours for your questions and further discussion.
Session 1 What Will I Offer? So Many Options!
We’ll discuss themes and content for gatherings ranging from 20-minute tastes of an art project to 90-minute workshops to all day adventures. Suggestions for workshops built from scratch as well as those anchored in existing material will be shared. From introductory basics to more advanced themes to combining expressive arts modalities - a spectrum of possibilities will be presented. You’ll learn how live and virtual workshops can be tailored for various groups and levels of experience. In a small group, you’ll tap into your creativity and adaptability to generate some fresh ideas for virtual and in person gatherings.
Session 2 Creating a Structure That Works for You and Your Participants
A thoughtful, well-constructed agenda is essential to a successful workshop. You’ll gain the tools needed in this session. The length and structure of your workshop will be determined by factors such as the content, audience, setting, and your preferences. Perhaps you’ve been asked to present a 2-hour session at a conference, or you’ve got an entire day to fill with whatever you wish – we’ll discuss the whole spectrum. We’ll review key considerations for any agenda and present issues to consider in specific situations (including virtual workshops). Kat and Michele will share example agendas with a diverse spectrum of activities, sharing lessons learned and practical tips. In small groups, you’ll have an opportunity to draft and refine an agenda.
Session 3 Making It Happen
It’s all about preparation, and you’ll learn how to build a robust but flexible plan for the stages of creating and presenting a workshop. We'll discuss options for marketing, registration, communications, venues, policies, and preparedness for virtual and in person offerings. You’ll get loads of practical recommendations and resources for supplies, technical equipment, and presentation options. We’ll discuss what possible challenges to anticipate at each stage of this process and how you can prepare accordingly. (Always expect the unexpected!) In small groups, you’ll have a chance to share ideas and get feedback from your facilitator colleagues.
COST: TBD

Kat Kirby is known for her creative retreats, workshops and virtual classes. She has developed a vast collection of SoulCollage® offerings and other expressive arts adventures. After training as a Facilitator in 2006 with Seena Frost, she went on to become a Facilitator Trainer. From 2010 to 2020 Kat trained over 200 new Facilitators. She enjoys witnessing people’s journeys as they build a deeper understanding of themselves through a large range of creative processes. Her teaching experience includes graduate level Expressive Arts Therapy courses as well as experiential events with mixed media materials both in the studio, online, and at week-long retreats in beautiful places.
Dr. Michele Manos has almost 50-years of experience as an instructor for groups ranging from elementary school children (creative drama) to medical residents (as a Professor). She trained as a SoulCollage® Facilitator in 2008, with Seena Frost, and has been taking her workshops and retreats to new and deeper levels since then. She has created an array of offerings designed to encourage self exploration through images, collage and writing. In response to pandemic isolation, she began SoulCollage® Together Tuesday virtual gatherings for which she has produced over 30 uniquely crafted workshops.
Since 2020, over 150 people have participated in the original course series "Sustaining Your SoulCollage® Practice" or this current course. Many of them are now hosting their own virtual groups, leading creative workshops online, and developing novel workshops that include art, SoulCollage®, creative writing and more! This new series is designed to help expressive arts instructors build essential skills and access surprising sources of creativity to plan and produce successful workshops in the virtual world and in person.
Comments from previous course participants -
Personally, I felt refreshed and also inspired. Professionally, I learned tools to improve my virtual classes.
Already putting to use what I have learned. Great sharing of tips, tools, techniques and equipment.
I feel more confident I could provide a class on Zoom and that it could look and function in a professional way. I also like that you showed us how to handle some of the hiccups that can occur with Zoom/virtual classes!
You definitely expanded my way of thinking and presented such a great variety of themes and ideas that can be used for a workshop. I fear before these sessions I might have been terribly boring. Now I feel excited to try all your suggestions...
